Did you know Part of what is now the city of Alexandria, Virginia was at one point temporarily part of the District of Columbia. Specifically, the areas included most of "Old Town" and the entirety of Arlington County were selected in the late 1700's to become part of DC. This delegation didn't last forever though, and in the mid 1800s the land was released by the federal government back to the state of Virginia. This corresponded to a redefining and downsizing of the DC area to omit land to the south of the Potomac River. Several years later the area that now comprises Alexandria was re-chartered.
