Did you know Augusta served as the temporary state capitol of Georgia for about a decade near the end of the 1700s. Augusta was founded in 1735 shortly after the founding of Savannah. The founder of Savannah was determined to build a settlement at the farthest point upriver where the waterway was still traversable by boat. A group of soldiers were sent to find such an area, and survey the land for the establishment of a city. James Oglethorpe, who arranged the expedition, was responsible for naming the new town, and choose Augusta.
