Did you know in the 1800s, Bangor was known as a tough town. Supported largely by the logging industry and trade port, Bangor attracted sailors and loggers who were known for getting out of control in the local saloons and tavern. At one point the strip where which housed all of these places of businesses was known as the "Devil's Half Acre". The situation deteriorated when people from overseas began to arrive seeking work in the area. The locals fiercely opposed these newcomers and a wave of violence broke out which didn't stop for almost a week when it was halted by a militia. Seeking more security for its residences, Bangor decided to develop its infrastructure to support local law enforcement.
