Did you know the name 'Bear' supposedly originated from a local tavern prominently featured on the route from Wilmington to Dover. The tavern's exterior decorations included a large painted image of a bear, and before long the area was simply referred to as 'Bear'. Bear itself is not an incorporated town, city, or county, but just a blanket term for an area encompassing ZIP codes 19701 and 19702. What is now the Bear area developed as simply an agriculture and ranching community centered around a crossroads which housed a trading hub.
