Did you know Elk Grove's current town center is not in the same place as the original town center. When Elk Grove was first established, it was centered on a stage coach station on the old Monterey Trail. At the time, this route was the number one source of economic activity and traffic in the area. That didn't last long though, and everything was changed when railroad tracks were laid nearby. As soon as that happened, the town center of Elk Grove slowly but inevitably moved away from the stage stop and over to the railroad stop. Originally, the town developed as a farming community, but as the sprawl from neighboring large cities has crept out, Elk Grove has become more of a 'bedroom community'.
