Did you know Evansville has received several accolades in recent years such as the prestigious "All-American City" awarded by the National Civic League. Evansville was also chosen by Kiplinger as one of the finest all around cities in America. The history of the city of Evansville goes back more than two hundred years when the first permanent establishment was built in the area, then known as La Belle Riviere, or 'The Beautiful River'. This name, which had been bestowed by early explorers, didn't stick. Once the area gained more attention, it was soon plotted out for a township. After the new township was established, it was renamed for one of its founders, Robert Morgan Evans.
