Did you know the city of Flint, Michigan had its origins in the fur trading business. Like many early settlements in the area, Flint started off as a trading post. Jacob Smith, the first European to make his home in the area, was not only a skilled trader but also a diplomat who communicated with the Native Americans in the area on behalf of the American government. Both the Native Americans and the American government painted Smith as an honest and capable man. Once Smith passed away he bestowed much of what he had to the rest of his immediate family.
