Did you know the area that now comprises the city of Fort Lauderdale was the site of heavy United States military presence during the Second Seminole War. The area was covered by multiple forts, the first of which was built by troops under the command of Major William Lauderdale. Three of the forts took the name Fort Lauderdale, after which the city is named, and all of those forts were housed in what is now prominent areas and neighborhoods of Fort Lauderdale. Oddly enough the area was completely uninhabited for several decades following the war. When the settlement that became what is now the City of Fort Lauderdale was built, the forts had been unused for almost half a century.
