Did you know the name Fresno refers to a type of tree which was prolific in the Fresno County area. When European settlers and explorers reached the area, they were in awe of the white ash trees in the area, and when the county was created, it was called 'Fresno' because Fresno is Spanish for white ash trees. The county existed for almost thirty years before the town of Fresno developed. The city of Fresno originated as a stop on the Southern Pacific railroad, and, as with many train stations at that time, the stop became a center for commerce and naturally a town started to develop around it. Fresno was officially incorporated as a city in 1885.
