Did you know as a college town, Gainesville's history has been dramatically molded and affected by the creation of the University of Florida. The history of the University of Florida goes back to 1905 when the creation of the school was ordained by the Florida State Legislature. Several cities competed to house the new University with Gainesville ultimately winning out. Gainesville's winning bid was likely due to the amenities which it offered to the University free of charge. These included municipal services that were considered cutting edge at the time such as electricity, water, and sewage. The University of Florida began instruction in the fall of 1906.
