Did you know Hayward has gone through many names in the past, most of which were slight variations to the current name such as Haywood and Hayward's. To this day the exact origin of the name is unknown, however it seems to have been named after one of two men with the last name of Haywood; one of which was a wealthy man named Alvinza Hayward who made his fortune during the gold rush, and the other was a business owner by the name of William Hayward. In any event, it also seems clear that the city at one point had its title altered to Haywood as a result of a technicality not allowing the one of the public facilities in the city being named after a living person.
