Did you know Huntsville was once called Twickenham, named after the native town of Alexander Pope. The man who named the area Twickenham was named Leroy Pope, and he was able to acquire the area that is now Huntsville because John Hunt, a Revolutionary War hero for whom the area is currently named and the first settler of the Huntsville area, did not adequately register his land claim when he settled the area. Leroy Pope was a relative of Alexander Pope, hence the reference to hometown Twickenham. However, in 1812 strong anti-English attitudes resulted in the changing of the name to Huntsville to recognize John Hunt's service during the revolutionary war.
