Did you know during the early twentieth century, Jacksonville, Florida was known as 'The Winter Film Capital of the World'. At that time New York City was the center of America's film industry, and although this was beneficial from a finance standpoint, it wasn't very beneficial from a pragmatic standpoint. Filmmakers needed a fair-weather alternative, especially in the winter, and Jacksonville was their first pick. Jacksonville housed several successful film studios in the 1910s and 20s including Kalem Studios, which established itself in Jacksonville in 1908.
