Did you know Joliet was originally named Juliet. The land Joliet now occupies was first plotted out for settlement by James Campbell in the 1830s. Unfortunately, the town incorporated right before the area was hit with a devastating economic downturn in 1837 and ironically the citizens of Juliet demanded that the town be unincorporated in order to lessen their tax burden. Juliet was unincorporated, and the name was subsequently altered to Joliet. The name Joliet probably refers to the leader of an early French traveler who was among the first European's to survey the area. After its successful un-incorporation, the community of Joliet was then officially reincorporated several years later (around the mid 1850s). Wikipedia
