Did you know The state of Kansas instituted alcohol prohibition 1881, many years before the rest of the country. Citizens of Kansas City didn't have too much trouble with the law though, because they could and would just walk across the border into the portion of Kansas City that was in Missouri, which had a thriving pub and tavern industry. 12th Street in particular was lined with bars which were frequented by residents of both Kansas and Missouri. In the early 1900s, the movement against the sale of alcohol was gaining traction in many US states but Missouri repeatedly refused to enact prohibition. Three times attempts to institute prohibition were shot down by citizens' initiatives.
