Did you know Lafayette was originally named Vermilionville. Vermilionville was housed within the St. Martin parish which would later be split up to accommodate the parish of Lafayette. Lafayette, both the city and the parish were named after General Lafayette who became very well regarded by the citizens of the area. Although there was almost instant desire among the locals to rename Vermilionville to Lafayette, it couldn't be done until 1884 because a city by the name of Lafayette already existed in another part of Louisiana and to have two Lafayette's would certainly paint a confusing picture. Eventually the other city of Lafayette was absorbed by the larger cities around it, and Vermilionville was free to change its name to Lafayette.
