Did you know Lakewood has a surprisingly short history as an incorporated city. Before the 1970s Lakewood was just a bedroom community for the more developed areas nearby. At that time there were no municipal taxes and most city services such as law enforcement and emergency personnel were either provided by the county or by volunteer groups. However, the Lakewood community continued to experience tremendous growth and incorporation was inevitable. Finally in 1969 the community incorporated into the city of Lakewood. By that time, Lakewood had already had a population base just short of 100,000 people; for which Lakewood earned the distinction of being one of the largest cities at the time of incorporation in US history.
