Did you know nobody knows for sure whether Lancaster took its name from the city of the same name in Pennsylvania or if it was named after the original British city, Lancaster. Regardless, Lancaster began simply, like many towns and settlements in California near the end of the nineteenth century, as a few buildings at a railroad stop. In Lancaster's case it was the Southern Pacific Railroad, and like so many other small California towns, Lancaster soon developed into a productive and successful community which later turned into a large city. Lancaster owes part of its success to mineral resources that were discovered just outside of the city.
