Did you know The Little Rock area was a point of reference for westward bound travelers long before the city actually existed. The reason for the title "Little Rock" is in fact because of a geologic formation on one of the shores of the Arkansas River which was nicknamed "Little Rock" by French explorer Jean-Baptiste Bernard de la Harpe. This formation was the reference used by some of the first travelers through the region. The mark represented the end of the flat river delta of the Mississippi and the beginning of the more rugged foothills of the Ouachita Mountains to the west. The name became so commonplace that when a city sprung up in the region, it was called Little Rock.
