Did you know Los Angeles has a long and tumultuous past, changing national ownership several times. The settlement that eventually became Los Angeles was established in 1781 by Felipe de Neve. The original name was quite a bit longer than what is commonly used today. In its entirety it originally was El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de los Angeles del Rio de Porciuncula. Originally built by Spanish settlers, the city first changed hands in 1821 after establishing its independence from Spain, after which it was controlled by Mexico. Finally Los Angeles was acquired by the United States following the Mexican-American War.
