Did you know permanent European presence in the region that now comprises Louisville, KY began over 220 years ago when Col. George Rogers Clark came to the area. When time came to name the establishment, the local government decided that they would honor the French who, at that time were assisting the colonists in their fight against the British Empire. Louisville was therefore named after King Louis XVI. Many years later, the famous Louis and Clark expedition was planned and arranged in a city near Louisville called Clarksville. The area that was once Clarksville is now part of Louisville, and hence Louisville is now painted as one of the birthplaces of the Louis and Clark expedition.
