Did you know some of the canals and waterways used in present day Mesa were designed and constructed hundreds of years ago by the indigenous Hohokam people. The area that is now Mesa is the site of the most elaborate and expansive waterway system ever created by ancient peoples in the Americas. The Hohokam were able to create enormous canals that traversed miles and miles of arid land, some of which were thirty meters across and three meters deep. Access to water allowed the Hohokam to grow many different crops in the desert including tobacco, squash, beans, and cotton. At the peak of their civilization, the Hohokam had irrigated hundreds of thousands of acres of desert.
