Did you know the source of Modesto's name is the subject of much debate. Supposedly, Modesto was originally to be named after a man named William C. Ralston. William Ralston was businessman who was a prominent investor in many ventures in California at the time of Modesto's inception According to local legend, William Ralston turned down the offer to have the town named after him. Then, during the christening of the town, one of the employees of the railroad commented that William was "Muy modesto" meaning he was very modest. Apparently, the name stuck, and today the city still bears the name Modesto.
