Did you know Montgomery wasn't always the Alabama state capital. Originally Tuscaloosa held the capital which wasn't switched to Montgomery until 1846; twenty-seven years after two existing riverside settlements by the names of East Alabama Town and New Philadelphia joined to form Montgomery. In 1886 Montgomery helped pioneer modern public transportation by instigating one of the first comprehensive systems of electric powered trolleys. This resulted in one of the first instances in American history of city populations leaving downtown areas in favor of suburban areas, allowing it's downtown area to focus on economic development.
