Did you know the cotton gin was invented in New Haven by a former Yale student named Eli Whitney. Whitney contributed heavily to the economy and development of New Haven because of his inventions and manufacturing businesses. Whitney established a factory housed within New Haven which manufactured firearms. As New Haven grew into a hotspot of industrial activity, several other prominent factories were built. Many of these factories also manufactured firearms, such as that of famed gun manufacturer Simeon North. For a time, New Haven was dubbed 'The Arsenal of America'.
