Did you know the city of Orlando was named after a soldier who was killed in the Second Seminole War in the first half of the nineteenth century. The soldier's name was Orlando Reeves. Apparently Reeves also made his living (aside from being a soldier) relatively nearby. He owned and oversaw a sugar plantation nearby at Spring Garden. Early travelers in what is now the Orlando area discovered Orlando Reeves' name struck into a tree near present day Lake Eola. It became common knowledge (whether it was true or not) that the tree designated Orlando's burial site. Soon the area was referred to as 'Orlando's Grave'.
