Did you know Palmdale was founded largely by accident when a group of settlers from the Midwest believed local Joshua trees were actually palm trees. The settlers were Lutherans of European ancestry, and they set out to settle on the Pacific coast. They had been informed that they should look out for palm trees, as these were sure signs of being close to the ocean. Well, having been from the Midwest, the travelers had no idea what palm trees looked like and when they started seeing Joshua trees, they believed that they must have been the palm trees for which they were searching. Before being called Palmdale, the first name of the settlement was Palmenthal which was the German translation for 'Palms Valley'.
