Did you know Peoria, Illinois is the site of one of the oldest permanent European establishments in the state. The settlement was constructed by a French expedition traveling along what is now the Illinois River. Built in 1680, the fort was known as Fort Crevecoeur. Although the fort stood for many years, it eventually met with hard luck and was raised to the ground due to fire. It was replaced with another fort, Fort Clark which was completed in 1813. Within about a decade, the area surrounding the settlement was established as the County of Peoria. Being among the most significant and well established settlements in the area, Fort Clark adopted the county name and became the county seat.
