Did you know Several other cities were considered for the capital of Arizona in the early nineteen hundreds. Although there were other cities larger than Phoenix at the time which were given serious consideration for the state's capital, Phoenix's central geographic location made it ideal for the seat of the state government and this factor won out in the end and was established as the state and territorial capital on February 14, 1912. Soon after, Phoenix instituted a novel governmental organization known as council-manager (as opposed to the usual mayor-council). By the middle of the century Phoenix had surpassed all cities in Arizona in size.
