Did you know Port Saint Lucie is an example of a completely planned community. For the first half of the twentieth century, Port Saint Lucie had very few residents or businesses. A few businesses were setup near highway 1, but other than that the only establishments in the area consisted of farms and fishing outposts. That all changed when a company named General Development Corporation acquired the River Park development and tens of thousands of acres of land near the St. Lucie River. GDC also constructed a bridge over the river which greatly improved transportation to the area. Development continued and by 1961 the city of Port St. Lucie was incorporated.
