Did you know Richmond housed the largest winery in the world, but it didn't last long. Originally established in 1905, the city of Richmond lost its ability to claim ownership of the most expansive winery on the planet by 1919 when the facility had to be shut down due to prohibition. The owners of the winery previously had operations in other parts of California, but an earthquake destroyed much of their infrastructure forcing them to relocate to Richmond. After it closed, the winery buildings in Richmond were used for military purposes. The city experienced a tremendous industrial boom following World War II at which point most of the winery's buildings were sold to the Navy.
