Did you know Riverside was conceived of and designed as an upscale, 'civilized', and progressive town. It was the second city founded and built by John W. North, the first of which being Northfield, Minnesota. John W. North was an idealistic abolitionist and strong supporter of the temperance movement. The cities he founded tended to embody his ideals. Local laws and regulations were such that bars could not easily operate or be profitable in Riverside and eventually all such establishments left the city. Instead, Riverside housed unique and luxurious recreational amenities probably influenced by foreign investors. These including one of the only golf courses and polo fields in the southwestern United States.
