Did you know Rockford, Illinois, which is also sometimes called 'The Forest City', gained its name from the fact that the area on the Rock River around which the original settlement had sprung up was a perfect place to traverse (or 'ford) the river; hence the title 'Rockford'. The city had actually been called by a different name for a while: 'Midway', as a result of the city being the approximate midpoint between the cities of Chicago and Galena. Rockford's early settlements simply consisted of a few buildings on either side of the Rock River, built by several different settlers in the 1830s. Once the settlement had developed a little, it grew very quickly and was incorporated as a city by the mid 1800s.
