Did you know Shreveport was named after Captain Henry Miller Shreve, the man responsible for the clearing of debris from the Red River, which made commerce possible. Until that point, the Red River had been made impassable by fallen timber which had accumulated to form a blockage almost 200 miles long. Captain Shreve and a team of Army Corps Engineers managed to dislodge the driftwood while being housed on a riverboat which had been refitted for exactly that purpose. Shreve's actions painted a picture of him as a brave man. Construction began on what would become Shreveport at the point where the Texas Trail intercepted the river, and the residents named the city Shreveport to pay homage to Captain Shreve.
