Did you know South Bend, Indiana was once known as Southold, but to avoid any confusion with several other settlements by the same name, Southold changed its name to South Bend. Before the town of Southold was established, the only European settlements in the area consisted of trading posts which mostly bartered animal pelts. The first of these posts, which was known as Big St. Joseph Station, was established by an agent of the American Fur Company by the name of Navarre. He built a house for himself that was close by to what is now the center of present day South Bend.
