Did you know Stockton was founded by Captain Charles Maria Weber, a German immigrant and would-be gold miner. Upon traveling to the area in 1848, Weber realized that a much more lucrative business than gold mining was selling supplies and services to other gold miners. Weber setup and housed his operation in what is now Stockton, but at that point was referred to as Weber Point. As the settlement started to grow and develop, it was temporarily given several different titles, some of which were humorous, including 'Mudville' and 'Crapton'. Eventually, Weber himself decided on the town's official name. He named the city Stockton, in dedication to Commodore Robert F. Stockton.
