Did you know the area on which the city of Tallahassee resides was inhabited by several different Native American tribes at one time or another. The name Tallahassee is of Native American origins; it is from the Muskogean language and most likely translates to 'old fields'. The origin of this title is subject to speculation but experts believe it comes from the Creek Indians (who were later referred to as Seminole). The Creek has migrated to this area and found remnants of the Apalachee tribe of Native American who had occupied Tallahassee previously. This included large plots of land that had been cleared by the Apalachee tribe. Hence, the area was referred to as Tallahassee, 'old fields', and the name stuck. Wikipedia
