Did you know the name 'Tampa' probably comes from the Calusa word 'Tanpa', which means 'sticks of fire'. The Calusa were the indigenous tribe that occupied an area in southwest Florida. It is thought that perhaps 'sticks of fire' refer to the numerous thunderstorms that frequently roll through the area. There is some debate as to the original location of the Calusa people and the area they referred to as Tanpa. Archaeologists believe that the Calusa settlement known as Tanpa may have actually been further south in what is now Charlotte Harbor. When later European expeditions were dispatched to the area, they accidentally passed Charlotte Harbor and landed in what is now Tampa Bay. Wikipedia
