Did you know Tempe gets it name from the Vale of Tempe near Mount Olympus in Greece. Supposedly when an early traveler to the area by the name of "Lord" Darrell Duppa beheld some of the natural land formations in the area, he reflected on how it reminded him of a painting of the Vale of Tempe in Greece and the name stuck. Tempe was founded around the year 1879. Six years later, the decision was made by the Territorial Legislature to construct what is now present day Arizona State University in Tempe, although the school went through a myriad of other titles including the Territorial Normal School, Arizona Normal School, Arizona State Teachers College, and Arizona State College.
