Did you know Topeka is a Native American word meaning 'to dig good potatoes'. Apparently, the area which now comprises the city of Topeka was known by Native Americans in the area as a good place to harvest the prairie potato, Psoralea esculenta, which was a staple of their diet. The name was given to the area by the Kansa tribe, and was later adopted by the settlers who established the city of Topeka in the mid eighteen hundreds for the following reasons: "[it] was novel, of Indian origin and euphonious of sound." These settlers were New England abolitionists who formed several 'Free-State' towns in the Midwest following the adoption of the Kansas-Nebraska Bill.
