Did you know Visalia and the Sequoia Valley are among the highest producing agricultural centers in America. Visalia's role is more of an economic center, as is natural for being the largest city in the county. Visalia is also among the oldest cities in the area, first being established in 1852. The city was named after Visalia, Kentucky, which was the birthplace of one of Visalia's earliest settlers, Nathaniel Vises. Although Visalia is a prominent player in the agricultural industry today, it's origins can be traced back to the gold rush. In the eighteen hundreds, the discovery of gold along the Kern River attracted prospectors to the area and the settlement eventually grew into what is now Visalia.
