Did you know the District of Columbia was originally designated as two separate entities, the City of Washington, and the Territory of Columbia, with the City of Washington residing inside the Territory of Columbia. It wasn't until 1871 that the two were merged into a single area, which was ordered by an act of Congress. Since then the area has held the official title of District of Columbia, but amazingly the title 'Washington, D.C', which is actually a relic of the time when there was a City of Washington, is still used.
